AnnaSophia Robb holds an ukulele on the Hawaiian island of Kauai

AnnaSophia Robb, Lorraine Nicholson and Jeremy Sumpter were among the actors that were seen on the Soul Surfer set on the north shore of Kauai Thursday March 4th by Dennis Fujimoto of The Garden Island. The crew was said to be shooting a scene staged for summer, when the weather prompted them to take a break and try the ukelele with Sunshine Patey and Irie Driscol, who accompanied the brother of Bethany Hamilton, Noah Hamilton. The article published by The Garden Island reads that the coordinator for Kauai said, “The crews will be back for more shooting later in the month”. Tom Hamilton, Bethany Hamilton’s father, said that he saw a preview, and an Awa Lodmell recently tweeted that she watched a trailer.

Bethany Hamilton talks about AnnaSophia

Bethany Hamilton has talked with Surfer Mag about AnnaSophia Robb and her portrayal of Hamilton in the upcoming movie Soul Surfer:

She’s actually really cool and we’ve become really good friends. I actually saw her in a movie a while back, Bridge to Teribethia, and my mom said to me, “You know, I bet she could play you in the movie.” I just sort of laughed but she randomly wound up getting the part. But like I said, we’re both good friends and share a lot in common. She’s actually a really talented surfer naturally. I took her to my surf coach on Kauai, Russell Lewis, and he got her in the water and taught her how to surf and she’s pretty good. I think if she didn’t have the time constraints and everything with the movie that she could be a really good surfer.

Soul Surfer said to film at least to March 13

Tim Ryan’s Reel Hawaii, a blog that first talked about AnnaSophia’s involvement in Soul Surfer in early December 2009, says that said movie has about two more weeks of Oahu filming to at least March 13, “before”, as the blog says, “heading to Kauai for a couple of quick trips…”

The Honolulu Advertiser talks with Soul Surfer people

The Honolulu Advertiser recently talked to Sean McNamara, Bethany Hamilton, Douglas Schwartz, Tom Hamilton and AnnaSophia Robb about Soul Surfer. AnnaSophia says, “There have been a lot of difficulties, just physically,” and, “There are challenges.” “When I first started, I always forgot to put my arm behind my back,” she said. “Everything on land you can do with one arm. Surfing is really hard with one arm.” In the article, they also talk about AnnaSophia’s bruises that she got from collisions with her board, and she said, “I have a cut on my leg from the skeg and I love it,” adding, “I hope it scars.” One writer/producer, Douglas Schwartz, said, “I felt she was a star on the rise,” and, “She is a serious actress. She can pull the tears out. She has had some tearful scenes. And she has a beautiful look. She looks like a young Elizabeth Taylor.” Bethany Hamilton, whom AnnaSophia portrays in the film, said, “AnnaSophia is a really talented actress and she works hard for the roles,” adding, “I didn’t realize how much actors had to put into their job.” AnnaSophia ended the article saying, “I think spiritually, the hardest part of this film is it is a really intense story,” and, “Capturing Bethany’s essence is hard to do. We have such different personalities but we were able to connect.”
